Today we are going to be reviewing one of those items that is small and often overlooked in the world of home security, and that is the not-to-be-underestimated peephole, or as it is referred to in order to sound more respectable, a door viewer.
In this case, we’re looking at the National Hardware V805 Peephole / Door Viewer.
Door viewers / peepholes deserve a bit more of our respect because while they are not as flashy as some deadbolts, or as high tech as some security cameras can be, a peephole has a job to do and its an important one.
How many times have you heard the doorbell ring or a knock at the door and wished you could easily see who it was without having to creep around to a window just to make sure it wasn’t someone you didn’t want to talk to (door-to-door salesmen, anyone?)
Well, that’s just what a quality peephole like the National Hardware V805 Door Viewer can do for you, with an excellent field of view which is nice and clear, letting you see who is at the door without them seeing you.
Extremely Clear View
One of the most important things about a door viewer is for them to have a clear field of view, and this National Hardware V805 model does indeed provide you with a very clear view of what’s outside your door.
Due to the clarity of the high quality glass, if you are inside looking out, you’ll have no problem seeing who’s there not to mention clear across the street.
For a door viewer to be good, they need to use the right kind of glass, and this model uses four precision ground glass lenses, which, in this case, proves to be an excellent choice. Bravo!
Huge Field Of View
The next thing to discuss is the field of view, and this door viewer can be counted among the best since it has a perhaps wider than necessary field of 200 degrees.
That’s a wide angle lens, and you can definitely take advantage of all that viewing to see what’s going on in and around your door.
Color Selection = Good
This particular model, the V805, comes in 7 colors. This is great for matching it to the style and color of your home, as you can pick the perfect door viewer that fits in perfectly.
The great thing about these door viewers is that the color schemes are fairly classic, so even if you pick the “wrong” color, its not going to look too bad no matter what.
These peepholes come in your classic colors that generally suit homes such as: Antique Brass, Satin Nickel, Bronze, Antique Bronze, Chrome, and Solid Brass.
Price Is Right
Depending on the material you choose, the price of this door viewer is going to vary. For instance, brass is more expensive than chrome and satin nickel.
So yes, expect prices to vary depending on the material you go with, but overall they are found to be reasonably priced on Amazon.
Installation Is Easy
When it comes to installing this particular door viewer, you’re looking at about a 15 minute job if you know what you’re doing and have a drill handy.
Check Your Door First
Before you use your drill, just make sure that the door viewer is going to fit your door. This door viewer fits doors which are 1-3/8″ to 2′ thick. So grab a ruler and check that out.
Then, decide what height you want this peephole to be at. You don’t want it to be too low or too high.
You will have to take into consideration the height of the members of your household as well, since that’s whose going to need to look through your peephole.
It isn’t just about aesthetics, but practical reasons as well. Obviously if your family has a lot of shorter members, like children, putting it too high isn’t going to help them when they need to check to see who’s at the door.
Drill A Pilot Hole First
A pilot hole will make sure you don’t get any splitting on your door and ensure also that you install your peephole straight.
Drilling from the outside in is probably your best bet here to make sure that it was centered.
Should you drill from the inside out, there’s a chance you’ll have a hole in your door that is noticeably off-center.
If you make a mistake, its better for your peephole to look better from the outside than inside since this is what most people will see.
Here’s a quick video which shows you how to do it if you’re still not sure:
Steel Doors OK
Another great thing about this door viewer is that it also works for steel doors.
Drawbacks With The National Hardware Door Viewer
If you buy this door viewer / peephole online, it will arrive with not much fanfare. So you’ll probably have to end up YouTubing the installation, since there are no instructions.
Inside Flange Could Be Bigger
This inside part of the door viewer could be just a little bit bigger, but that’s not a big problem.
We give this National Hardware V805 door viewer / peephole a solid 4.5 STARS, as we have no major issues with it and neither do most customers it would seem
Overall this peephole will add security to your home, and also it just adds a lot of convenience as well.
If you get a lot of solicitors, it is good to see who is out there first before opening the door. Excellent product!
